U17 Miami Lakes Soccer Team

Thanks to the members of the Miami-Dade Justice Association, a group of underprivileged inner-city teens have entered Florida State Cup competition! The U17 Miami Lakes boys have been together for a number of years. They are lead by Head Coach Richard Velasco and Assistant Coach Arthur Garcia. To their credit, the boys were Florida’s 2000-2001 President’s Cup Champions. Their training and discipline has piloted them to numerous tournaments throughout the season including Plantation Thanksgiving Classic and the Cocoa Beach Expo.

Several of these boys walk miles to train three days a week and travel from outside the Miami Lakes area. Saturday morning car washes have assisted in paying for uniforms and equipment. Six out of fourteen were scouted recently for the Olympic Development Program and another four were identified by a well renowned university. From the team, four are seniors recently accepted to college and the remaining group is mainly juniors looking forward to their senior year and the endless opportunities. Soccer has become a powerful avenue for these boys because therein may lie their only opportunity for college. Thanks to the support and contribution of the Miami-Dade Justice Association and its members, they can continue to dream and someday their dreams may become reality.
